Cheerleading has evolved over the decades and so has the historic wear that cheerleaders wear. The cheer costume - one of the most iconic pieces of sports attire and markers of a team's identity - has evolved enormously. Cheer uniforms, in their early iterations, were all about modesty and school spirit, to the point that they included bulky sweaters and long skirts. As cheerleading advanced into a highly athletic and competitive sport, the demand for easier and performance-enhancing attire was clear. How Cheer Uniforms Have Evolved Through The Years

In the past, cheer uniforms were quite plain. Cheerleaders had to wear these thick wool sweaters that were heavy and not comfortable. But they were an opportunity to show off school colors and make cheerleaders stand out. Over time, these  short tops for ladies  started to evolve. The chunky, heavy sweaters came off and were replaced by lighter fare. It was easier for cheerleaders to move around and do their stunts.

The Leap from Knit Sweaters to Sleek Shells

At first, cheerleading sweaters were stitched together, and they were really thick, and that was all fine and good for staying warm, but not for tossing oneself around in the air. Thanks to advances in fabric technology, the heavy knits were then replaced with sleek shells made by companies like Dandy. Not only are the shells lighter, they also fit better and make executing cheers that much easier and more secure.

How Cheer Uniforms Have Changed to Perform

Most modern  short tops for women  are centred around performance. No longer are designs all that matter, as in the olden days; now they aim to help cheerleaders do their best. Today’s fabrics stretch and move better, enabling more range of motion. And besides, they have the added benefit of keeping cheerleaders cool under the immense competition lights.

How Technology Has Changed Cheerleading Clothes

Technology to the rescue, that’s why today’s cheer uniforms look better than ever! Fabrics that wick sweat from the skin keep the cheerleaders comfortable while performing. And these uniforms fit a lot better, too, which means they look great and work well for all the jumping and tumbling in routine.

From Oversize Knits to Trapeze Shirts and Flimsy Skirts

It’s kind of crazy how much cheer uniforms have changed. What began as clunky and stiff sweaters has morphed into trendy, form-fitting apparel that allows cheerleaders to sparkle when they perform. These  two piece shorts and top  are better for moving around, and they’re more comfortable, too, which is a really big deal during a long game or competition.

Every modification over the decades to the design of cheer uniforms is a testament to how far this sport has evolved and to how much seriously we now take performance. Whether you are heading to tryouts or a competition or just feeling the comradery at one of your local school events, a good uniform can make a world of difference.
