What advantages does granular activated carbon have in long term water treatment?

Introduction

Municipal water supply and large industrial water treatment projects need to run continuously for years, so the selected activated carbon must have stable performance and long service life. Granular activated carbon has become the preferred material for long term water treatment systems by virtue of its unique structural characteristics and working performance. Understanding its core advantages can help water treatment enterprises reduce failure rate and cut long term operating expenditure.

Granular activated carbon adopts particle structure with uniform size, which is neatly stacked inside fixed water treatment filter tanks. When water flows through the carbon layer, pollutants such as chlorine, peculiar odor, organic matter and heavy metal ions in water can be fully captured by the developed pore structure. Different from powdered activated carbon, its adsorption speed is gentle but lasting, and the purification effect will not fluctuate with the change of water flow in continuous operation. Even if the water quality has slight fluctuation in a short time, granular activated carbon can maintain qualified water outlet standards. Its strong mechanical strength prevents particle pulverization in long term water scouring, avoiding carbon powder leakage and water quality secondary pollution.

The most prominent advantage of granular activated carbon in long term projects is regenerability. After working for a period of time and reaching adsorption saturation, it can be sent to professional processing workshops for thermal regeneration. After high temperature treatment, the pollutants trapped in pores are removed, and the adsorption capacity can be basically restored to the original level. A single batch of granular activated carbon can be regenerated many times, which greatly reduces the frequency of material purchase and replacement. For large water treatment plants with daily water volume reaching tens of thousands of tons, the reuse characteristic can save a large amount of material cost every year and improve the economic benefit of the whole project.

Long term operating equipment pursues low maintenance difficulty and cost, and granular activated carbon fully meets this demand. After the initial filling is completed, daily work only needs regular backwashing of the filter tank to prevent carbon layer compaction and pipeline clogging. The backwashing operation is simple and will not interrupt the normal water supply for a long time. Compared with powdered activated carbon which needs frequent feeding and separation, granular activated carbon requires fewer manual operations. Its long single service cycle also reduces the times of shutdown and replacement. For water treatment enterprises, fewer shutdowns mean higher continuous production capacity and more stable service for end users.
